The 2005 Winter Play Reading Series

Written by
Alana Valentine

Directed by
Wesley Enoch

With
Justine Clarke, Lillian Crombie, Judi Farr, Julie Hamilton, Ray Kelly, Deborah Mailman, Kris McQuade and Kyas Sherriff

The Parramatta Girls Training School operated from 1889 to its close in the late 1970s as a state home for ‘uncontrollable’ girls. Under the guise of ‘reforming’ them, these teenagers were subjected to mental, emotional and physical brutality. It was a start in life that was metered out to vulnerable, uniformly poor and frequently indigenous women.

Based on verbatim accounts of the memories of women who were incarcerated in the home, Parramatta Girls tells a story of incredible courage, indomitable humour and a passionate longing to finally expose the truth. This is the third draft of the work that was presented at the 2004 Winter Play Reading Series.

About The 2005 Winter Play Reading Series

The days are getting shorter, the nights are getting colder and at Company B we are in the depths of programming our 2006 Season. Some of our most exciting writers have come bursting out of their garrets with their latest works, eager to see the play read in front of a live audience. That’s where you come in. Come and be our guinea pigs at The 2005 Winter Play Reading Series so we can find out if these plays tickle your funny bones and touch your hearts.

We reckon the plays are pretty good so we’ve assembled some of Australia’s finest directors and actors to bring them to life in a series of rehearsed readings over four weeks. After each reading stay for a drink in the Belvoir St Theatre Bar and have a chat with us about the plays. This way we’ll know what delights and what doesn’t, while you’ll get a sneak peek at the tasty theatrical fare we are considering for 2006.
