Home is Where the HeART is

A Theatre Production by Sydney Street Choir

Based on the Greek Myth of Orpheus & Eurydice

The story of Orpheus is one of the most enduring of Greek myths, and an important metaphor for creative artists around the world.

The Orpheus of the Sydney Street Choir's new work Home is where the heART is follows a similar path - except in this version, Eurydice is not the hero's love, but an event of adversity in each Choir member’s personal journey.

Members of the Sydney Street Choir are homeless and disadvantaged men and women. They have been confronted with some of the toughest challenges life can present, and they inspire audiences with their personal stories of how they are working to overcome their challenges, and realise their dreams.

The Choir members and Director in the creation of this work have given the ancient narrative a contemporary slant and in a new guise; the ever-relevant myth of ‘Orpheus’ has been reborn in a unique theatrical and choral production.  In Home is where the heART is, the Orpheus myth is told from many personal perspectives and is an extremely moving musical journey.  The production has received support from the City of Sydney and Company B and will be staged on Monday 20 July, Monday 27 July and Monday 3 August.

The Street Choir’s Orpheus has become an embodiment of hope and temperance, obsessed with the memory of an event in his life that he can’t move past. Each Choir member has written of their own hope through rehabilitation, enabling them to “move past”, reclaim happiness, and avoid turning back until they reach the end of their “tunnel”.

Choir Director Peter Lehner explains, “Choir members have written of their most challenging times, facing adversities, illnesses or addictions that left them in a place of despair and hopelessness, where they felt isolated, alone and in a place they would liken to Hell."
