Belvoir St Theatre History

Message from Neil Armfield Improvements

Buy a seat and continue to build a Better Belvoir!

In 2005, Company B launched a campaign to sell naming rights to our theatre's famous SEATS and the iconic STEPS leading to the Upstairs Theatre (the 80 seats of our Downstairs Theatre have were grabbed early on by one generous individual!).

We are delighted that all our steps have now been taken, but there are still plenty of seats available.

A seat can be purchased for a minimum of $1,000

Your name would be written on a small individual plaque affixed to the back of a bench seat in the theatre.

Back at a Better Belvoir

It’s hard to believe it’s over two years since the doors first opened on our wonderfully refurbished Belvoir St Theatre. Like you, we revelled in the delight of returning home, but it soon became evident that some finer touches were needed. Let’s just say the cake was beautifully baked but the icing was not quite set! It was through your letters and feedback that we were able to prioritise the work that still needed to be done, and we have been busy all year making those changes. Here are the main ones:

Air Conditioning

You suffered both hot nights and cold nights at the theatre! Getting the temperature in the building right has been our biggest battle, but after further work and a year’s experience we hope we're getting nearer to having it just perfect!

Handrails

We received many a letter asking for handrails to be installed in the theatre (both upstairs and downstairs) – so we did!

Sound Proofing

Holes have been covered, gaps sealed and pipes lagged in both theatres, which has dramatically reduced outside noise seeping into the theatres. More recently we even added sound proof curtains just to be sure we have done all we can.

Foyer Acoustics

With so many hard surfaces sound waves were bouncing around our foyer like a beach ball, the consequence of which were a loud foyer where you had to shout to be heard. Sound baffling panels in the ceiling have greatly helped that problem.

Foyer Comfort

We have increased the number of seats, tables and ledges in the foyer so you can sit (or stand) and enjoy a Belvoir St Silver Spoon repast!

Owing to time and budget restraints the work has been a little slower than we would have hoped, but we got there in the end – thanks for your patience and for holding in there!! If you have any other thoughts do pass them on to us – the theatre was redeveloped for our artists and for you, so please let us know if you think we’ve missed anything out!

The redevelopment of Belvoir St Theatre has resulted in:

  • Increased foyer space

  • Air conditioning for the whole building

  • More comfortable seating in the Upstairs Theatre

  • Full access into all areas of the theatre for disabled patrons including a lift to all levels

  • New dressing rooms for both theatres

  • Improved technical and backstage facilities including lighting and sound

  • Corporate entertaining facilities

Our second building houses:

  • Offices for all of our Administration and Production staff

  • Our Box Office (business hours)

  • A long overdue rehearsal room

  • Our costume store
