B Sharp

The Downstairs Theatre is home to B Sharp which presents an annual season of independent works curated by Company B. In partnership with independent artists, B Sharp presents dynamic small-scale works inspired by big visions and big hearts. The season delivers a vibrant range of theatrical voices in an intimate setting: new Australian works, reinvented classics and the very best of contemporary international writing.

Now in its eleventh year, the program has grown to hold a unique place in the Australian theatre landscape and over the next few years will continue to grow as a hub for new work, new ideas, new collaborations and stories that need to be told up close and within spitting distance!

This season is made possible through the dedication and passion of the independent artist involved, many of whom give their time without guarantee of remuneration.

B SHARP AUGUST – DECEMBER SEASON LAUNCHED!

Following on from some stunning work already this year at B Sharp including Ladybird, Ollie and the Minotaur and Beyond the Neck, we’re now thrilled to launch the August – December season.

You’ve still got a few weeks to catch Whore, Rick Viede’s debut play and recipient of the 2008 Griffin Award, directed by Christopher Hurrell. July brings the world premiere of a new dramatic adaptation of Nikolai Leskov’s marvellous novella Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk. Adapted by Robert Couch and directed by Joseph Couch this journey into the femme-fatale tradition promises to be a winter treat crackling with intrigue.

The August – December program offers a hand-picked selection of surprising and adventurous work we can’t wait to share, beginning with some fantastic contemporary international writing and the Sydney premiere of Will Eno’s sharp and witty, Thom Pain (based on nothing). This play has been generating buzz around the globe and we’re thrilled that director Sam Strong and Luke Mullins have teamed up for this exciting new production.

Next up filmmaker Peter Carstairs (September) makes his debut at B Sharp with Martin McDonagh’s The Lonesome West. A black comedy full of family conflict, accidental death and a spectacular array of religious figurines, Toby Schmitz and Travis Cotton take to the downstairs stage as a pair of rogue Irish brothers.

Fresh from his Company B production of The Promise, Simon Stone and The Hayloft Project premiere their new work The Only Child; an intimate and delicate study of one couple’s struggle to deal with guilt, grief and the evaporation of love inspired by Henrik Ibsen’s Little Eyolf.

B Sharp is also delighted to present the world premiere of Silver, written and performed by Matthew Whittet. Directed by Ben Winspear, Silver was developed through the B Sharp creative development program. Running for a limited season only, Silver promises to be a real storytelling treat – mesmerising in its simplicity – so be sure to get in quick.

Shannon Murphy returns to B Sharp after her award-winning production of My Name is Rachel Corrie with the Australian premiere of Bliss, a surreal and provocative text by Québécois playwright Olivier Choinière. Veering between humour and horror, Bliss is a remarkable exploration of our contemporary world and its obsession with fame and celebrity.

To celebrate the beginning of summer, our investigation of the classics continues with Eamon Flack’s refreshing production of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Transforming the theatre into a glittering world of desire, mischief and revelation, this production is the end-of-year party not to miss.

See you at the theatre soon!

B SHARP 2009 SEASON MARCH - JULY ANNOUNCED!

2009 is set to be a year full of surprises. March – July presents five diverse works each offering an individual, handcrafted experience. Fantastic stories from near and far told with bold artistic vision and clear Australian voices.

Kick-starting the year, Small Things Productions presents the Australian premiere of Vassily Sigarev’s haunting black comedy Ladybird directed by Lee Lewis. Set over one eventful night on the urban fringes of a crumbling society, a young man throws himself a farewell party before heading off to join the army.

Next up Adelaide based ensemble floogle, make their Sydney debut with Ollie and the Minotaur by Duncan Graham, directed by Sarah John. Three friends reunite for their annual holiday and in the blistering heat their shared histories begin to unravel. We welcome Ollie and the Minotaur to B Sharp after acclaimed seasons in Adelaide and Melbourne.

In May, Iain Sinclair returns to B Sharp after his smash hit Killer Joe in 2008, with a new production of Tom Holloway’s AWGIE winning play Beyond the Neck. A remarkable and profound meditation on loss created in the aftermath of the 1996 massacre at Port Arthur, Beyond the Neck speaks to the heart of one of our nation’s greatest tragedies.

We’re thrilled to announce the Australian premiere of Whore, Rick Viede’s debut play and recipient of the 2008 Griffin Award, to be directed by Christopher Hurrell. Told with originality and poetic wit Whore is an unflinching exploration of the high-risk ride that is coming-of-age.

July brings the world premiere of a wonderful new dramatic adaptation of Nikolai Leskov’s marvellous novella Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk. Adapted by Robert Couch and directed by Joseph Couch this journey into the femme-fatale tradition promises to be a winter treat crackling with intrigue.

This year at B Sharp we know you will find an experience that’s really special – performances that will pull you out of the everyday world and create for you something intimate, precious, moving and memorable, and that’s just the beginning, so don’t forget to check back in with us mid-year to find out what we have in store for August - December in the Downstairs Theatre.
