B SHARP 2008 SEASON UNVEILED!

Kicking off a fantastic year of must see work on the Downstairs stage is the premiere of Brendan Cowell’s Philip Parsons Young Playwright commission Ruben Guthrie, an uncompromising black comedy about addiction, relationships and spin, directed by Company B Associate Artist Wayne Blair.

Next up is the Australian premiere of My Name is Rachel Corrie, directed by newcomer Shannon Murphy. This extraordinary work tracks the haunting true story of a young woman’s experience as a human shield in Palestine.

Then venture into the servants’ quarters with a re-envisaging of Strindberg’s classic Miss Julie, directed by Russian-born Vladislavs Nastavshevs, or enter the surreal playground of Simon Stone’s contemporary adaptation of Frank Wedekind’s Spring Awakening after an acclaimed Melbourne season.

Don’t miss Tanya Goldberg’s production of Tim Crouch’s mind-bending An Oak Tree, guaranteed to surprise as one half of the cast changes every night, or another rare find, the Australian premiere of Tahli Corin’s debut play Bumming with Jane – a unique romantic comedy for the modern world directed by Kellie Mackereth.

Christopher Hurrell brings us Tony Kushner’s remarkable slice of humanity, international politics and cultural dissonance Homebody/Kabul; then join Iain Sinclair  - fresh from directing The Seed Upstairs - in a dusty trailer park deep in the Texan wilderness for Tracy Letts’ Killer Joe.

Things hot up as spring turns into summer with another award-winning Australian work, Laura Scrivano directs A View of Concrete – Gareth Ellis’ dark and witty take on the urban reality of the future at its tipping point. Then launch into the festive season with Kate Gaul’s production of Laura Ruohonen’s Queen C, a mysterious and poetic ride through the world of a wild and enigmatic 17th century Swedish monarch.

So switch off your TV (off not standby!), roll up your iPod headphones and come join us in our intimate Downstairs Theatre to celebrate this remarkable moment in time before the world moves on and the future takes us who-knows-where…

Philip Parsons Young Playwright's Award 2008

The Philip Parsons Young Playwright’s Award is presented annually to a writer under the age of 35 whose work demonstrates an original and compelling theatrical voice. The recipient is given a rare opportunity – a paid commission to write a new work supported by Company B.

The Award commemorates the life’s work of Dr Philip Parsons, AM (1926-1993). Dr Parsons was co-founder of the performing arts publishers Currency Press and an influential teacher and mentor to many of the students, scholars, actors, directors and playwrights who created the new wave of theatre and drama in the 1970s.

To be eligible, writers must be under 35 years of age, based in NSW, and have had a play produced between 1 June 2007 and 31 May 2008. Applications are now open and will close on 31 July 2008. Download the guidelines and application form here or email bsharp@belvoir.com.au to request one to be sent to you.
